Shining For Christ

Shining for Christ:
Scripture:
"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." — Matthew 5:13-16 (NIV)
Reflection:
Jesus calls His followers to be both salt and light in the world.
1. Being the Salt of the Earth
Salt was a valuable commodity in biblical times, used for two primary purposes, to preserve food and add flavor. As Christians, we are called to be a preservative in a decaying world, standing for truth, righteousness, and love. We are also called to add the "flavor" of Christ to those around us, making a difference in our communities, workplaces, and homes. As we practice what it means to commune with God, that should impact the way we live.
Ask yourself: Am I living in a way that preserves God's truth and love in the world?
2. Being the Light of the World
Light dispels darkness. As believers, we are called to shine the light of Christ through our actions, words, and attitudes. Just as a mirror reflects light so should we reflect the light of Christ. This world is full of darkness—fear, sin, and hopelessness—but even the smallest light can make a difference.
Jesus warns against hiding our light. Fear, doubt, or societal pressure may tempt us to keep our faith private, but He calls us to boldly shine so that others can see God’s love through us. You don’t have to be a scholar or pastor to impact the world for Jesus. A mechanic, mill worker, or stay at home mom can preach the gospel by the way they live their lives.
Ask yourself: Am I shining the light of Christ in my daily life, or am I hiding it?
Application:
Speak truth with love – Just as salt enhances flavor, let your words and actions reflect God’s goodness. We never shy away from the truth but there is a loving way to convey it.
Stand firm in faith – Preserve biblical values in a world that is shifting away from truth. Let the Word of God be your compass, guide, and foundation to how you view and interact with the world around you.
Shine brightly – Don’t be afraid to let your faith be seen. A simple act of kindness, a word of encouragement, or living with integrity can show someone Christ. One of these moments may speak louder than screaming “I love Jesus” from the street corner.
Prayer:
Lord, help me to be the salt and light You have called me to be. Let my life reflect Your truth, grace, and love. Give me courage to stand firm in my faith and shine brightly for You. May others see You in me and be drawn to Your saving grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
I pray that you would be salt and light in Taylor County and wherever God takes you.
