Week 1. Tuesday: How’s That Working For You?

PRAY: Ask God to speak to you from His Word.

READ: Ecclesiastes 1:1-3

1 The words of the Teacher, son of David, king in Jerusalem: 2 “Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher. “Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.” 3 What do people gain from all their labors at which they toil under the sun?

UNDERSTAND: get a deeper understanding of the key words

Begin by underlining nouns with a single line, double underline verbs, and circle descriptive words.
Make a list of the key words/phrases and think about what they mean.

Snapshot: In this passage Solomon says that everything is meaningless. Later in Ecclesiastes we find out that he means a life without God is meaningless. The Hebrew word for meaningless is hebel which means vapor or smoke. When we live for created things and accomplishments it’s like trying to grasp smoke. We never actually capture what we are chasing. If we spend our lives chasing created things we will miss the Creator. That leads to a meaningless life.

We spend a large part of our lives at work. Are you spending so much time making a living that you don’t have time to actually live?
