Better (W4D1) All Alone

Week 4. Monday: All Alone

PRAY: Ask God to speak to you from His Word.

READ: Ecclesiastes 4:7-8

7 Again I saw something meaningless under the sun:

8 There was a man all alone; he had neither son nor brother. There was no end to his toil, yet his eyes were not content with his wealth. “For whom am I toiling,” he asked, “and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?” This too is meaningless—a miserable business!

UNDERSTAND: get a deeper understanding of the key words

  1. Begin by underlining nouns with a single line, double underline verbs, and circle descriptive words.

  2. Make a list of the key words/phrases and think about what they mean.

Snapshot: In this passage Solomon tells us that if we spend our lives working to gain wealth but have no one to enjoy it with, it is meaningless. The man all alone asks a very important question, “For whom am I toiling, and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?” This is a great question for us to ask as well. If we say we are working for our family’s sake, but we never get to enjoy things with our family, what’s the point? How can enjoy life if we don’t have anyone to enjoy it with?

Takeaway: A life without real relationships is meaningless.

APPLY: What is this passage calling me to do?

  • Who are the most important people in your life?

  • How much time do get to spend with the people most important to you?

  • Who are you working for? Would they agree?

PRAY: Ask God to help you prioritize your relationships above money.
