Ephesians (W2D2) Knowing God Better

Week2. Tuesday: Knowing God Better

PRAY: Ask God to speak to you from His Word

READ: Ephesians 1:17

I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.

UNDERSTAND: get a deeper understanding of the key words

  • Paul prays that God would give the Ephesians the ability to know God better.

  • Wisdom (Greek: sophia): knowledge that is acted upon (Luke 21:15)

  • The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 1:7)

  • Wisdom is correct knowledge that leads to action (Matthew 7:24-27).

  • Knowledge without action is foolishness.

  • Revelation (Greek: apokalypsis): to know truth clearly (1 Peter 1:13)

  • General Revelation: God’s creation is visible to everyone (Rom. 1:20)

  • Special Revelation: God’s Word (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

  • Know Him Better (Greek: epignōsis): precise, correct knowledge (Philippians 1:9)

  • We should be continually growing in our knowledge of God.

  • However, we must make sure we are gaining correct knowledge.

  • The Bible is our source of who God is and His will.

  • Also see Colossians 1:9

APPLY: What is this passage calling me to do?

Paul asked God to give the Ephesians the Spirit of wisdom and revelation so they would know God better. What the Ephesians needed is what we all need - to know God better. Knowing who God is and who we are the most important things we could learn. Our lives should show that we are growing in our walk with Christ.

Would you consider yourself a wise person? Why or why not?

Remember, wisdom is knowledge that leads to action.

It is not enough to know about God’s Word, we must also obey Him.

Are you a student of God’s Word?

The Spirit of revelation comes from reading and studying God’s Word.

Scripture not only guides us but also reveals who God is and who we are.

Without scripture we will not grow, we will starve to death spiritually.

What changes do you need to make so you can know God better?

Ideas: more time in the Bible and prayer, more faithful in your church, be more generous, serve others more.

PRAY: Ask God to reveal the ways in which you need to know Him better.
