James (W3D2) Repent & Replace
Week 3. Tuesday: Repent and Replace
PRAY: Ask God to speak to you from His Word.
READ: James 1:21
21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.
UNDERSTAND: get a deeper understanding of the key words
Get rid of: To put aside, put away, or have nothing to do with. This Greek phrase apotithēmi is also used to refer to stripping off filthy clothes.
Moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent:
As followers of Christ we are called away from immorality and evil.
Prevalent: Because our lives are filled with temptation, we must work hard to rid ourselves of anything sinful.
Humbly accept: to receive without resistance
If we are not careful we can develop a prideful attitude toward what God asks us to do or not to do. We must learn to accept God’s truth as absolute truth regardless of our situation or circumstances.
We must stay humble when we approach God and His word so that we can hear from Him and learn to apply His word.
The word planted in you:
This can refer to our personal study of God’s word, but here James is referring to being taught God’s word.
This is also referring to the fact that God has written His word on our hearts. This truth is found in Jeremiah 31:33.
Which can save you:
This refers to what we call progressive sanctification.
This is the daily process of being made more like Christ.
APPLY: What is this passage calling me to do?
In what ways can we replace what is evil in our lives with God's word?
Are you growing in your faith? In what ways have you grown?
PRAY: Ask God to help you get rid of evil and grow in your faith.
