#getoveryourselfie (W1D3) Selfish U
Week 1. Wednesday: Selfish U
PRAY: Ask God to speak to you from His Word.
READ: Philippians 2:1-3a
1 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit.
UNDERSTAND: get a deeper understanding of the key words
Begin by underlining nouns with a single line, double underline verbs, and circle descriptive words.
Make a list of the key words/phrases and think about what they mean.
Snapshot: It seems almost impossible to do absolutely nothing out of selfishness. But these words mean more than just being selfish. Selfish ambition is the motivation to elevate oneself at the expense of another. It means to manipulate others to get what you want. Vain conceit is translates in the NLT as “Impress Others”). It means to desire to honor ourselves, attract attention, win praise, or make ourselves the main object.
Takeaway: The call here is not so much to never do anything for yourself but rather to never do anything that elevates you at the expense of someone else or do things just to impress others.
APPLY: What is this passage calling me to do?
What are some ways you consider yourself naturally selfish?
If you are honest, how much of what you do or say or post is make yourself appear better than others or to impress other people? Why is this a dangerous way to live?
What can you do to begin to change this?
PRAY: Ask God to reveal areas where you are naturally selfish. Ask God to begin to show you these areas when you do them.
